What is the EU Green Deal?
On 11 December 2019, shortly before the global flue pandemic outbreak, the EU Commission has proposed the European Green Deal by issuing a Communication setting out the Green Deal vision as a new growth strategy transforming the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 (so-called ‘climate neutrality commitment’).
As a backbone of the proposed decarbonization strategy, in June 2021, the EU has finalized formal procedures of adopting the European Climate Law enshrining the goal to reach net zero emissions into law, plus hosting a set of measures to achieve it.
Speaking of the specific actions, EU has also published the largest legislative package related to the climate and energy – ‘Fit for 55 package’ with a main assumption of reduction of 55% greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels). Although the EU has never been short of bold energy and climate targets and exercising its ambition over the large geography of its neighbourhood, this triumvirate of the actions has no doubt exerted particularly strong impacts on Europe’s near neighbourhood together with the like-minded third parties, i.e. countries marking the network of EU’s legal, political, and administrative cooperation.
European Green deal targeting at shifting climate and environmental challenges into opportunities and establishing a modern economy growth strategy with fair and inclusive transition for all policy sectors, entails nothing less than a new configuration – a sustainable economy harmonised with the natural environment. Although, sustainability is being an architect compounding the puzzles of the EU Green Deal, the modifications and challenges to be implemented also embarks on the economy to becoming more competitive and robust. This, intrinsically, calls for contributions and encouragement from all and everyone.
